The Main River is an approximately 90 km long tributary of the Labrador Sea to the east of Labrador in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The headwaters of the Main River is 30 km east of Nipishish Lake at an altitude of about 380  m . The Main River initially flows 25 km to the east. Then he turns south. It flows through several lakes over the next 15 km. At river kilometers 22.5 and 9.7 the river overcomes a waterfall each. However, these are not considered to be a particular obstacle for migratory fish . The Main River finally flows into the western end of the elongated Double Mer Bay , which lies north of Lake Melville and opens to Groswater Bay . The municipality of Rigolet is located about 76 km east of the river mouth . The catchment area of the Main River covers 1425 km². The lower course of the river is mainly bordered by alders and willows .

Fish fauna

The anadromous form of the brook trout is common in the river. According to NASCO, the river system also has a stock of salmon that is considered "not endangered".
