The Main Street Jamboree was a Canadian country broadcast broadcast by CHML of Hamilton, Ontario .

history

Beginnings

In 1951, the management of the channel CHML planned a barn dance show, as there were numerous in the USA. Therefore, auditions were held to find talented bands for the show. However, this took longer than planned, and so it was not until 1952 that planning began under the direction of Ken Soble, program director Russ Eastcott and Tommy Darling. The first show of the Main Street Jamborees took place on November 8, 1952 in the CHML Auditorium.

Ascent

As early as 1953, the show was one of the most popular Saturday night shows in Canada and attracted many visitors. The musicians and bands that performed in the Jamboree were mainly recruited from local musicians from Ontario, but the management was also able to organize guest appearances by stars such as Lefty Frizzell , Faron Young , Hank Locklin , Ferlin Husky or Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper . The show's most popular group, however, were the Hillbilly Jewels , which consisted of Vivian Brown, her brother Joe, Randy Stewart, Sam "Speedy" Learning, and Bob "Windy" Wingrove. The show was hosted by Gordie Tabb. Other members of the Mainstreet Jamborees were Jack Kingston, The Mainstreeters, Maurice Bolyer, Suzie Chambers, Orval Prophet and "Cousin Clem". A nine-year-old Brenda Lee and Jimmy Martin , who was still playing with Bill Monroe at the time, also made regular appearances there.

Later, a half-hour sequence of the show was broadcast nationwide. In the late summer of 1954, Ken Soble's show was also televised. But at the height of its popularity, the show came to an abrupt end. After a dispute between the sponsors and the radio station, the show was postponed to Wednesday evening and the advertising for the Mainstreet Jamboree was discontinued. As a result, ratings dropped and many members left the show. Host Gordie Tabb later appeared on the television show Hee Haw . The show continued with little success until 1957.
