The Main Bridge in Klingenberg am Main at Main km 112.780 is the only inner-city connection across the Main between the districts of Klingenberg and Trennfurt . For a short time after its commissioning, the structure was the only individual traffic bridge over the Main between Aschaffenburg and Marktheidenfeld .

history

Today's bridge is the third structure that stands on this site.

First bridge

With the construction of the Aschaffenburg – Miltenberg railway with a train station on the opposite bank on November 12, 1876, the importance of crossing the Main for the city of Klingenberg grew. The first bridge was built in 1880 at the expense of the city, which had come to prosperity through income from the Klingenberg clay mine . The five superstructures, with a standard length of 36 meters, were girder bridges with iron trusses on the sides and a 4.4 meter wide carriageway below. The top chord of the truss was curved following the course of the moment load.

The building formed a connection between the new train station and the old town and, after being equipped with electric lighting, attracted numerous onlookers at night. In 1929, part of the bridge collapsed when the barrage was being built in Klingenberg . A worker was killed in the process. On March 26, 1945, the German troops retreating from the Allies blew up the bridge.

Second bridge

In 1949, the second bridge was rebuilt as a steel composite structure with steel girders arranged below the deck with the same spans. The single-span girder was designed as a structural system in the longitudinal direction at the two end spans and a continuous girder at the three central openings .

Due to its poor condition in the meantime, the bridge has only been accessible to vehicles with a total vehicle weight of 16 tons since 2000. In 2006 a new pillar was built on the east bank and the superstructure was converted into a two-span girder system. After the construction of the third bridge, the old Main Bridge superstructure was demolished in September 2012. The bridge piers were dismantled down to the river bed in spring 2013.

Third bridge

On August 18, 2008 the government of Lower Franconia issued the planning approval decision for a new building upstream of the Main and on October 8, 2009 building permits were granted. Construction officially began on June 7, 2010. On July 27, 2012, the new bridge was ceremoniously opened to traffic.

It was a construction project costing 11.3 million euros, which also included the connection of State Road 3259 to the road network on both sides of the new bridge. The implementation took place within the framework of a public private partnership . The construction company Max Bögl took over part of the financing, construction and maintenance for 25 years , the Bavarian state will pay its pre-financed portion of 6.3 million euros in ten annual installments from the completion of the construction project. The water and shipping administration contributed 4.8 million euros as the initiator of the construction reduced to a central pillar. The rest of the city of Klingenberg.

After a variant investigation, a two-span prestressed concrete box girder bridge with spans of 91 meters each and a construction height of 4.55 meters above the central pillar and 2.3 meters in the bridge fields was implemented. The new bridge construction enables the planned widening of the waterway with the Klingenberg barrage . This makes it 2.1 meters higher than the old bridge, which means that the roadway has a maximum longitudinal incline of 5.5 percent. The new structure has a clear passage height of 6.4 meters at the highest navigable water level. It is 16.7 meters wide, 8.0 meters for the roadway and 4.0 meters each for the sidewalks and cycle paths separated from the roadway.

The bridge was built in two construction phases from west to east on a stationary shoring. In the first 120-meter-long section, the superstructure was raised 3.2 meters so as not to obstruct ship traffic and, after completion, lowered into its final position.
