The Lake Mainit is the fourth largest lake in the Philippines and is located in the northeast of the island of Mindanao . It occupies a total area of 173.4 km² and has a maximum depth of 223 m.

geography

The freshwater lake is located on a narrow plain, nestled between mountain ranges on the northern tip of Mindanao Island . On its eastern coastline is the Diwata mountain range with Mt. Kabatuan and Mt. Mabaho, on its western side the southern ridge of Mount Tendido, whose foothills extend into the town of Tubay and delimit the lake from the coast.

The Mainit Lake belongs partly to the Philippine province of Surigao del Norte and partly to Agusan del Norte . There are a total of eight municipalities on its banks: Alegria, Tubod, Mainit and Sison from the province of Surigao del Norte and Tubay, Santiago, Jabonga and Kitcharao from the province of Agusan del Norte.

The closest cities are Surigao City, 42 km to the north of the lake, and Butuan City , which is 82 km to the south.

There are a total of fourteen streams and small rivers that supply the lake with fresh water. The Lalinawan River carries the water from the lake to Lake Pagusi and the Tubay River, which carries it to Butuan Bay . The coastline is sloping and has a total length of about 50 km.

The lake is at an altitude of 27 m above sea level and its average depth is 128 m. The neighboring land is used for agriculture and is mainly used for rice cultivation. The shore area eventually turns into an extensive wetland area.
