The Mainz city printer is a prize awarded by the state capital Mainz . It has been awarded every two years in the Gutenberg Museum since 1988 . The prize is intended to honor graphic artists , press printers and typographers who have made a special contribution to the further development of various aspects of printmaking. Applicants who either have their place of residence or their studio in Mainz or the immediate vicinity are required to refer to Mainz. The winner receives prize money of 6,000 euros and is associated with a solo exhibition in the museum. Furthermore, the award winner undertakes to hold a “City Printer Week” in the museum's print shop and to show printing demonstrations at least once. He is also supposed to produce a new graphic or a sequence ( folder ) for the city of Mainz.

With the award, the city of Mainz would like to remember one of the greatest inventions of mankind, which began in Mainz - the invention of printing with movable type by Johannes Gutenberg .

The independent jury consists of the head of the cultural department as chairman, the director of the Gutenberg Museum, a representative of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , Faculty of Fine Arts, a representative of the Mainz University of Applied Sciences , a respected graphic designer and a specialist journalist (the latter two are from Gutenberg Museum proposed and appointed by the Lord Mayor ).
