description

Maja crispata is a medium-sized species of crab, the carapace of adults reaches a length of 60 to 70 mm. The distinctly pear-shaped carapace is much longer than it is wide and more rounded in larger specimens. The dorsal surface is slightly curved outwards. With the exception of a weak or unreinforced, window-like patch on each side of the stomach region, the top is covered with granules and short spines. The spine in front of the eye socket is sharp, almost straight or slightly curved upwards. The largest sting is behind the eye sockets. On the lateral edge of the carapace there are three strong spines and a few small, sharp granules and short spines. At the rear edge there are two clear spines and a small one between them.

The small spider crab is reddish to brown-yellowish. The gills of the spider crab are in the gill cavity under the first pair of legs, protected and hidden by the carapace . To move around , she uses all ten striding legs and mostly moves sideways. The gender can be identified using the pleon . The pleon is the crab's rear part folded onto its stomach, which is as wide as the body in females and just looks like a thin strip in males.

distribution

Maja crispata occurs from Portugal to Mauritania and in the Mediterranean at depths of up to 120 m.
