Maku ( Persian ماكوalso Mahku , Máhkú ) is a city in the northwestern Iranian province of West Azerbaijan .
It is 22 km from the Turkish border and is at an altitude of 1634 m and is traversed by the Zangmar , which rises in the surrounding mountains. The city currently has around 47,000 inhabitants (2012). The Maku Free Trade and Industry Zone was established west of the city .
population
The population is composed of Azerbaijanis and Kurds . Both ethnic groups claim the city for themselves. According to Azerbaijanis, this area was the home of the Turkmen Qara Qoyunlu . The Armenians also claim this city for themselves. The former Armenian monastery of St. Thaddäus is located approx. 20 km south of Maku .
history
The region belonged to the media in antiquity and then to the Persian Empire . After the Turkic people immigrated to Iran in the 17th century, Maku was one of the Azerbaijani khanates that remained after the collapse of Safavid rule.
name of the city
Since this region belonged to media in antiquity, it is assumed that the name of the city comes from the Persian term Mad kuh ("mountain of the Medes "). Maku could also have been composed of the words Mah (= moon) Kuh (= mountain). So "Mondberg" or "Bergmond". Another explanation would be Máh ("moon") Ku ("where"), that is, "where is the moon"? This referred to the city being surrounded by high mountains that hide the moon. A third explanation would be the Armenian word maki , which basically describes a place where sheep have enough to eat.
