behavior
The Malaienliest is a calm, shy bird. This kingfisher goes foraging alone or in pairs. From a seat guard, it hunts for prey primarily on the ground, but also in the foliage and in the water. The diet consists of large invertebrates and small vertebrates such as cicadas , longhorn beetles , fishing horrors , snails , up to 9 cm long scorpions , small fish , blind snakes and lizards . It is believed that the bird is able to remove the venomous sting from scorpions.
Reproduction
The breeding cave of the Malaienliests is in most cases dug in a sandbar, in rare cases in a rotten tree trunk. The 60 cm long tube has a diameter of 10 cm and ends in a 20 cm brood chamber. The clutch usually consists of two eggs. The nestling period lasts around 22 days.
