The Malay civet ( Viverra tangalunga ) is one of four species of Asiatic civets within the crawling cats . It is native to Southeast Asia on the Malay Peninsula and numerous islands in the Malay Archipelago , Indonesia and the Philippines .

The Malay civet cat has a slim body, it reaches a head-trunk length of about 58.5 to 95.0 centimeters and a tail length of 30 to 48 centimeters.

The fur is covered with numerous black spots on a sandy-brown to gray background, which merge into a striped pattern on the back. There are usually three black and two white collar-like rings on the sides of the neck and throat. The coat is long and loose and forms a black crest of upright hair in the area of ​​the spine from the shoulders to the tail. The tail is otherwise ringed in black and white and the feet are black.

The Malay civet is found in Southeast Asia. The natural distribution area includes the Malay Peninsula , Borneo, Sumatra and Belitung , Bangka , Lingga and Palawan , while the occurrences in the rest of the Philippines, on the Natuna Islands and in Indonesia east of the Wallace Line ( Sulawesi , Moluccas ) on humans is due.
