Malcolm Beckwith Parkes

Malcolm Beckwith Parkes (born June 26, 1930 in Charlton , † May 10, 2013 ) was a British paleographer .

Life

He was educated at Colfe's Grammar School in Lewisham. He studied at the University of Strasbourg and Hertford College . After graduating, he worked for his family's export business before spending a year as an archivist in the library at Lambeth Palace from 1957-58 . In 1961 he was appointed professor of English language and literature at Keble and Mansfield Colleges , Oxford. Four years later he became a fellow and tutor at Keble. Between 1965 and 1974 he was a fellow librarian at the college. When the library got a new extension, he discovered around 90 manuscripts instead of the 16 listed, and decided to publish a catalog ( The Medieval Manuscripts of Keble College Oxford , 1979). Parkes was a Fellow at Keble College , Oxford for 30 years , where he worked as a tutor for Ancient and Middle English. In 1996 he was appointed First Professor of Paleography at Oxford University. Since 1993 he has been a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy .
