Male Bonding is a British rock band, the genre of the Independent - noise rock can be allocated, but also style elements of grunge and punk contains.
history
The three founding members Jon Arthur Webbs, Robin Silas Christian and Kevin Hendrick knew each other long before Male Bonding was founded, as they worked in the same record store. Webbs and Hendrick soon played together in an indie rock band called Pre. After the friends moved into a shared apartment, the three of them decided to start their own band.

In addition to numerous gigs in the pubs of their homeland, Male Bonding toured a lot even before the release of their first studio album. In addition to Sauna Youth, they also got to know Best Coast and the Vivian Girls during the tour . The Vivian Girls could later also be heard in the song Worse to Come on their debut album.
Occasionally the band's sound spectrum is expanded with an additional guitar played by Nathan Hewitt, also a close friend of Jon Webbs'. However, he is not a member of the band, does not co-write the songs and himself leads the Cheatahs , a shoegazing rock band.
In 2010 Male Bonding released their debut album Nothing Hurts , about which they stated that they wrote it for the most part "on the go", ie during several touring stays. The musicians had already signed the record deal with Sub Pop in 2009. The album was not made available to the general public due to the band's low level of awareness, but it received consistently positive reviews from the relevant press. The Guardian's culture report awarded the work four out of five stars, and in NME Magazine it was ranked 72nd with eight out of ten points in the “best albums of 2010” ranking.
After two EPs were released in 2010, the second album Endless Now came out in 2011 , which was again awarded four stars in the Guardian, but received a rather negative review on the BBC.
After the album was released, the group did not break up, but since mid-2013 there have been only a few gigs and no new songs. Hendrick and Christian also play in the band Primitive Parts , which they founded with Sauna Youth guitarist Lindsay Corstorphine.
After the band announced on Facebook in August 2015 that they would work together again, their third album Headache was released on October 12, 2016 .
style
Bassist Hendrick described the Buzzcocks as a major influence on the musical style of the band , and he and the other band members also had a great preference for Ride , Mclusky and American punk rock music in general .
In the album Endless Now you can clearly hear that bands like Nirvana and the Ramones also had a certain influence on the melody of the songs.

Backgrounds and trivia
Male bonding refers to a very close, non-sexual relationship between men. The best way to translate this is male friendship , and the English term bromance has also found its way into the German language. The name aptly reflects the image of the band, as all their actions, both the founding, the tours and interactions with other musicians, are based on friendship, and the line between the private and the musical does not seem to exist for the members.
The topic of male friendship and homosociality is ironically dealt with in the music video for Years Not Long , which shows the band members and some peers doing “typically male” activities such as ball games, weight lifting, arm wrestling and drinking schnapps. Towards the end of the film, all of the male actors begin to kiss and undress each other.
When the band was looking for an additional guitarist, Jon Webbs immediately got the idea to ask his good friend Nathan Hewitt about his interest in working with him - he did so on his wedding day, of all places. Apparently Hewitt had other things on his mind at this point, which is why he didn't seem enthusiastic and had to be asked again later, but then immediately agreed.
