content

It is described over a period of 18 months how an eleven-year-old cheetah mother, called by the documentary filmmaker Maleika , raises her six cubs. Initially, the focus is on how she protects the young from predators such as lions and jackals, as well as her efforts to hunt down prey in order to be able to produce enough breast milk. One day she tears open her peritoneum and can only hunt to a limited extent. Two of the boys are prey to enemies, but this is not shown in the film; one is missing. A fourth is attacked and killed by a crocodile while crossing a river. The two surviving young cheetahs finally help their mother hunt. When they can hunt prey independently, Maleika leaves them. At the end it is shown how Maleika raises two more babies a year later, despite her old age.

Further scenes with cheetahs are shown by another mother with her young and by a sibling trio. In addition, the life of a pride of lions is shown in more detail. A longer scene shows a herd of wildebeest crossing a river and some animals being killed by crocodiles. Images of elephants, giraffes, hippos or birds are interspersed every now and then.

Information about the life of the cheetah is given in the commentary. In addition, their love of freedom and love for one another is emphasized. Furthermore, humanized thoughts of the animals are reproduced as off-votes .

Reviews

Falk Straub praises the pictures on spielfilm.de, even if they would appear "quickly redundant". But he criticizes the comment that vacillates "between flippant humanization and dripping pathos" and does not stick to the "animal facts". The film service is also of the opinion that “the redundancy of constant eating and being eaten in the long run does not outweigh the elegance of the agile, gracefully photographed animals”.
