Painter of Copenhagen 4223
The painter from Copenhagen 4223 was a Apulian vase painter . His works are published around the middle and into the second half of the 4th century BC. Dated.
The painter of Copenhagen 4223 ( emergency name after the vase of names in Copenhagen ) artistically follows the Lykurgos painter and the Varrese painter and is considered the predecessor of artists such as the Darius painter and the underworld painter . Along with the Gioia del Colle painter , who thematically represented almost the same motifs and stylistically almost identical to the painter from Copenhagen 4223, he is considered to be one of the most important representatives of his time. Both painters probably worked in the same workshop.
The artist is known for his large vases, including many volute craters , and for some hydrates . Interestingly, scenes with men are depicted on the craters and exclusively with women on the hydria. They are usually with popular motifs such well sepulkral decorated vases used: on the front you can see mourners at a temple-like tomb ( naiskos ), on the back of a stele. Most of the youths depicted in Naïskos are reminiscent of statues. Sometimes they are accompanied by a squire, a horse or often a dog. The volutes of the handles are mostly decorated with relief masks, at the lower handle base there are often swan's heads, which are often painted white, and under the handle bases multiple palmette fans arranged one above the other . On the front of the neck either a figurative scene or a head embedded in tendrils can be seen.
The painter from Copenhagen 4223 has a larger repertoire of head images (such as Pan , Orpheus and others) to decorate the necks of his vases, and his flower compositions are more imaginative than those of his immediate colleagues.
