The Malerwinkel, view from the Dankwartsbrücke

The Malerwinkel in Lübeck is a small green area on the edge of Lübeck's old town.

It is located on the west bank of the Trave on the (northern) Wallstrasse between Possehlstrasse and Dankwartsbrücke, southwest of the intersection at An der Obertrave / Dankwartsgrube , with which it is connected by the Dankwartsbrücke, a wooden pedestrian bridge. Historically, the area of 1,827 m² is an extension of the Lübeck ramparts between the city and the Katz bastion .

Typical view from Malerwinkel (2012)

In the 20th century this place was popular with painters and photographers, because results of this angle from a perspective Southwest view of the Old Town, where the twin towers of the Marienkirche west of the tower of St. Peter's Church seem to be, even though they actually are one block further east . The Dankwarts Bridge can usually be seen in the foreground.

In 1935 the Hamburg postcard publisher Hans Andres published a postcard Blick vom Malerwinkel . Walter Schärffe, who was at that time the syndic of the Lübeck Chamber of Commerce and Industry , who was also the managing director of the Lübeck Transport Association, included a slide with this look and this name in his slide presentations on Lübeck in 1938/39 . This seems to be the first evidence for the use of the name so far.

A picture by Wilhelm Castelli from 1964 combines photography and painting, in which it shows a painter with an easel in the foreground, painting the view of the church towers that have just been restored.

In the second half of the 20th century, the name and motif found their way into travel guide literature as a popular motif for artists .

In the course of the urban reorganization of the west bank of the Obertrave, which led to the demolition of the existing warehouse buildings and the construction of new residential buildings north and south of the Malerwinkel, the association Malerwinkel Lübeck eV was founded in 2005 , an initiative mainly by residents of the cathedral district to preserve the unobstructed view of the old town.
