Mallorca - Search for Paradise was a German television series . The series was broadcast from April 1999 to January 2000 in ProSieben's early evening program. The last episodes were broadcast in the station's morning program until February 2000, after which all old episodes were repeated until November 2000.

action

The series tells the story of dropouts who saw no future in Germany and are looking for their personal paradise and happiness on Mallorca. In particular, the respective motives for this search diverge greatly. Some are on the run from relationships, the law, family, or other obligations. Others, however, are looking for great love, adventure or just a change.

The linchpin of the series is real estate agent Rolf Stein. He is tough and often uses illegal methods to conduct his business. He lives with his girlfriend Kim Ambach, a former stewardess, and his 19-year-old daughter Stefanie in a wonderful villa. He is also the owner of the Son Vent Hotel , which is run by his brother Volker. He lives there with his wife Christine, their 15-year-old daughter Carina and their 16-year-old son Lukas. The group around Rolf Stein also includes his secretary Carmen Diaz, who is responsible for all business matters. The hotel's neighbors are the car mechanic Ricardo Velázquez and his German partner Eva Hansen, who originally came to the island with Rolf Stein. The two live together with their 22-year-old son Felipe and the hotel employee Nicole Beck on an old Mallorcan finca. There is also the bartender Jan Keppler, who works in the hotel as well as in the El Diagonal disco and the beach bar , which also belong to Rolf Stein.

Rolf Stein also plays a role at the port. There is his motor yacht Stefanie , which is looked after by the two skippers Marc Osterkamp and Thomas Köhler. The two also live on the Velázquez family's finca. The Velázquez 'car workshop is located in the port facility near Son Vent . Julia Breuer's marine shop Aquarius is also located there. Julia has come to Mallorca for a fresh start and has given up her legal career in Germany. Now she runs a marine shop in Mallorca and wants to forget her past as a man. Her younger brother Andreas is a frequent guest. Lena Schilling and Maren Hoffmann also work in their shop. Lena and Maren met on their first day in Mallorca at the airport and were driving a car when there was an accident. This is where the real Lena died. In the hospital, however, there was a mix-up, so that Maren now lives under a false identity on Mallorca.

Production and broadcast

A year and a half before shooting began, work on the scripts for the series began and thousands of actors were cast in order to find the right eighteen leading actors for the series. The series was shot entirely on the island of Mallorca . For this purpose, a former printing press was rented in the capital Palma so that the interior shots could only be shot in one place. The Son Vent hotel was also rented as one of the main locations for the series. The outdoor shots, however, made up the majority of each episode with 70% outdoor shooting.

Despite the expensive production, which already cost ProSieben around 30 million DM in advance , the audience numbers  were only 1.5 million from the start. In the weeks that followed, the rate fell steadily, so that it finally reached the target group relevant to advertising with a 7% market share (around 530,000 viewers). At times, the series was even the ProSieben show with the lowest audience rate at all. Nevertheless, ProSieben initially stuck to the concept of the show for some time and tried in autumn 1999 to gain additional viewers.

Although the market share in the target group almost doubled as a result, ProSieben decided not to stick to the format any longer, so that at the end of November 1999 - completely surprising for the actors - filming was finally stopped. The last episode aired on January 14, 2000 on the early evening program. After that, the last episodes could be seen on the station's morning program until November 24, 2000. From 2001 to 2002 the series was repeated on tm3 and 9Live . From February 2008, the show was broadcast again on Romance TV .

Through the series, the production company Grundy UFA gained initial positive experiences with Mallorca as a production location. When a plot from the series “ Forbidden Love ” was relocated to Mallorca in 2011 , they benefited from it.

Carina Martinz also published two books to accompany the series in VGS Verlag: Reif für die Insel (1999) and Ärger im Paradies (2000).
