Malmsey Rangaka

Malmsey Rangaka (* 1957 in Mafikeng , South Africa ) is an entrepreneur and winemaker who is the first black woman to run a winery in South Africa.

Life

After graduating, Malmsey Rangaka worked as a lecturer in psychology at Northwest University in Mafikeng. Malmsey Rangaka is married to Diale Rangaka. In 2003 the couple bought a winery near Stellenbosch , South Africa . They called the winery M'hudi, which means "harvest helper" in the language Setswana . Neither of them understood anything about viticulture and had to develop the skills. After initially being ostracized by most white farmers, the M'hudi brand has established itself. Among other things, the grape varieties Sauvignon Blanc , Merlot and Pinotage are grown. 70 percent of the 80,000 bottles are exported, mainly to Europe.

The history of rangakas and wine attracted international attention in 2009 at the White House in Washington , where it was drunk at the inauguration of President Barack Obama .

Awards

Malmsey Rangaka was awarded the Eteya (Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of Year Award) in 2010, which is given to emerging entrepreneurs.
