Malta is a place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in northwest Portugal .
history
The first documented mention of the place Santa Cristina comes from a property deed from the year 1097. The community later came to the Order of Malta , which from then on was immortalized in the place name as Santa Cristina de Malta. The place name was subsequently shortened to Malta and then remained an independent municipality in the Maia district until its brief dissolution in 1855. Since then, Malta has been a municipality in the Vila do Conde district.
With the territorial reform of 2013, Malta was merged with Canidelo to form the new municipality of Malta e Canidelo .

Malta was the seat of an independent municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Vila do Conde in the district of Porto . The community had an area of 2.12 km² and 1384 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
As part of the regional reform on September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Malta and Canidelo were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Malta e Canidelo . Malta is the seat of this newly formed community.
