The vocational college Deutzer Freiheit is a commercially oriented vocational college in Cologne-Deutz .

history

The Deutzer Freiheit vocational college was founded at the end of the 1950s as a vocational school (BBS 6). Here teach currently about 90 teachers 1,900 students in the educational programs Business School (HaS), Commercial College (HöHa), Certified Commercial Assistant (CA), industrial clerks , merchants office communications (KfB) (formerly Bürogehilfinnen) and railwaymen in operational service . As an additional educational offer, the business school was included in the vocational college in 1991. There, around 90 students per course are taught in three classes by around 20 teachers.

In 2007, the Deutzer Freiheit vocational college won second place in the 2007 vocational school award of the Federal Association of Teachers at Business Schools . This came under the category “Promotion of intercultural skills through commercial schools”.

building

The Deutzer Freiheit vocational college was built between 1951 and 1959, centrally and conveniently in the area delimited by Gotenring, Deutz-Kalker-Strasse and the eastern feeder as part of a closed school complex. The north-south direction of the main building, which is desirable for urban planning reasons, resulted in a two-tier arrangement of classrooms facing east and west. The complex, built on a roughly T-shaped floor plan, is divided into a single-storey wing and a four-storey transverse building. The buildings consist of a reinforced concrete frame with masonry infill. With the light and air-flooded facade, which is given an additional accent by the glazed staircase in the main building, as well as the successful integration into the urban context, the school is a typical example of the school architecture of the 1950s, which is optimal in terms of urban planning, architecture and pedagogy Looking for solutions. The school building was therefore entered in the list of monuments of the city of Cologne in 1989 under the serial number 4977. The school complex was expanded in 2004 by a new building, which is based on the facade of the old building.

Commercial school (two-year vocational school for business and administration)

For secondary school students, the commercial school (HaS) is the traditional way to on the one hand subsequently achieve the intermediate educational qualification (technical college entrance qualification), possibly even with the Q-note (entitlement to attend the upper secondary level), on the other hand it is also easier to enter commercial vocational training.

A special feature of the HaS at BK Deutzer Freiheit is a support program tailored to the student body in order to facilitate the transition to society and the world of work:

  • a one-week educational adventure trip for all new classes
  • a special afternoon course "SBK" (promotion of social and professional skills) with in-depth professional orientation including company internships, intensive application training, theater education seminars ...
  • increased German lessons in smaller study groups
  • a comprehensive counseling concept by class teachers, counseling teachers and social workers

Higher business school

The classes are divided according to focus. In addition to English, Spanish and French are offered as an additional foreign language at BK Deutzer Freiheit. Since a second foreign language is not absolutely necessary for the technical college entrance qualification, there is also the option of choosing more English lessons or applied IT instead. A two-week school internship is carried out at the beginning of grade 12. The internship can also be completed in another European country, may be subsidized with EU funds and then lasts four weeks.

  • The “training exchange” in spring, which gives over 30 companies and institutions the opportunity to present themselves to the students with exhibition stands, information material and workshops.
  • The annual application project, in which the business school students advertise apprenticeships for model companies and offer themselves and the commercial school students the opportunity to go through the entire personnel selection process from the advertisement to the application, the recruitment tests, the assessment center and the job interviews.

State-certified commercial assistants

The training of state-certified commercial assistants (short: KA) at the vocational college Deutzer Freiheit began in 2007. Within three years, secondary school graduates acquire a double qualification, they acquire the full technical college entrance qualification (also known as the technical diploma ) and at the same time a high-quality vocational qualification according to state law.

At the vocational college Deutzer Freiheit, two subjects are offered: information processing (with a larger IT component) and business administration (with a focus on industry). The choice of specialization takes place at the end of the first year of training.

As part of the full-time training, 16 weeks of company internship must be completed, also abroad if desired. EU internships abroad are organized and financed by the school. Company internships, company tours as well as job-related and project-oriented lessons ensure practice-oriented training.

Important subjects are business administration with accounting, information technology and business informatics . However, teaching good English skills also plays a central role in the training of commercial assistants. Spanish can be chosen as a second foreign language.

After completion of the training, a professional activity is often taken up in the companies in which the trainees had previously completed an internship. This can be industrial companies, banks, insurance companies and other companies. Commercial assistants often work in public administration after their training.

Alternatively, you can continue your studies at a university of applied sciences , a comprehensive university and - under certain conditions - directly at a university (e.g. in Siegen). Various cooperating universities of applied sciences offer graduates a shortened degree. After completing a bachelor's degree at a university, a master's degree at a university is also possible.

Office management clerks

The lessons are offered both part-time (2 days a week) and in block form (lessons lasting approximately 14 weeks at a time). As a rule, after 3 years of training, the final exam is taken at the IHK. It is possible to acquire the advanced technical college entrance qualification at the same time as the vocational school qualification (double qualification).

College of Economics

Here, based on their commercial training, students can obtain a state-certified business economist with a focus on business informatics / organization and accounting / controlling. In order to prepare the students for management tasks, there is also an additional training in human resource management. The lessons are organized in the following 12 learning fields: German / communication, English, economics / politics, business and labor law, business administration, business informatics, mathematics and statistics, accounting, human resources management, sales management, differentiation (accounting alignment). In addition to face-to-face lessons, there are “self-study phases” and project work.

Trainees in the industrial clerks and office communication courses are able to attend the business school from the second year of training onwards. In this way, you can acquire two degrees within four years.

Students who have not yet obtained a technical college entrance qualification by the start of their training at the Fachschule für Wirtschaft, can attend a math course at the same time, which ends with an examination after the sixth semester. If this examination and the overall results of the technical college are successfully completed, the student has obtained the technical college entrance qualification.

If necessary, the School of Business also prepares students for the trainer aptitude test. Required knowledge such as visualization options, presentation and conversation skills are conveyed here, which are expected in the working world of executives in middle management.

The technical college also cooperates with technical colleges. At the moment there are cooperations with universities of applied sciences in the Cologne region:

The courses there are also possible part-time. At the EUFH and the Neuss University of Applied Sciences, graduates of the Fachschule für Wirtschaft can enter the fourth semester of the General Management course and, after successfully completing them, obtain the internationally recognized Bachelor of Arts degree. A Bachelor of Science degree can be obtained at the University of Neuss. AFUM offers state-recognized business economists with five years of professional experience the opportunity to start a master's degree.
