The railway worker in the company service is a state-recognized training occupation in Germany according to the Vocational Training Act .

Duration of training and structure

The duration of training to become a railroad worker in operational service is usually three years. The training takes place at the training company and vocational school .

The profession has two specialties :

  • Track as well
  • Train driver and transport.

Work areas

Railway workers in operational service ensure the smooth transport of people or goods in railway companies or railway infrastructure companies . They form trains and maneuver vehicles , they check the functionality of the wagons , for example through brake tests . But you also work in train supervision .

Specializing in train drivers and transport

In the field of train drivers and transport, the focus is on testing and operating locomotives . Railway workers specializing in train drivers and transport are mainly employed as train drivers in freight and passenger transport in the regional or long-distance transport sectors. Furthermore, a deployment as a train dispatcher or team or group leader is possible, provided that a corresponding training z. B. was graduated as master for rail traffic. During their training, the trainees also go through learning fields that are not necessarily relevant for their subsequent assignment, such as training to become a customer service representative or work in the workshop.

The training is offered by Deutsche Bahn in the business units DB Cargo , DB Regio and DB Long Distance as well as by several regional transport companies.

Specializing in track

The employees in the track department take care of the correct setting of points and signals, set tracks and are on hand to rectify faults and deviations. The deployment takes place here mainly as a dispatcher or switch keeper .
