The Malta is a river in Latgale , in eastern Latvia .

course

The river begins at Salājs Lake and is fed by several other lakes. The Diunokli , Luknoja and Tacu streams are sometimes considered to be the upper reaches of the Malta, which increases the statistical length. At high tide the Malta takes additional water from the Zosna Lake and Rāzna Lake on. At the lower reaches the slope is less than 0.5 m / km. Since the construction of the Malta-Rēzekne Canal in 1966, the Malta no longer flows directly into Lake Lubān , but into the Rēzekne . The old river bed has since been used to drain the Nagļu ponds .

The Malta is suitable for carp farming and is a popular destination for water tourists.

Settlements of the same name on the Malta

Two places through which the Malta flows are named after the river:

  • the village of Malta in the Rēzekne district . The Jewish community in Malta was one of the largest Jewish communities in Latgale until 1941.
  • the settlement of Malta north-northwest of Viļāni
