Mama Gassama

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mama Gassama (born December 28, 1984 ) is a former Gambian high jumper .

Life

Gassama started athletics in 1999. Her most important achievement was winning the gold medal at the Junior African Athletics Championships 2003 with a jump height of 1.60 m.

In 2004 Gassama was selected alongside Jaysuma Saidy Ndure as one of two people for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Since no other athletes took part in qualifying competitions, Gambia was only allowed to send two people, a man and a woman, to Athens. In June 2004 Gassama was trained for three weeks in Great Britain by the British national high jump coach Mike Dolby.

On July 31, 2004 Gassama left with the Gambian team from Banjul , but was not allowed to compete in Athens in the qualifying round for the final competition. According to Dodou J. Joof , General Secretary of the Gambia Athletics Association (GAA), the starting height of 1.75 m was set as the starting height in the qualifying round, which was well above Gassama's best, so that Gassama was not allowed to compete . In the qualifying round, the athletes later had to reach a height of 1.92 m in order to take part in the final competition.

For a short time, instead of Gassama, the Gambian middle-distance runner Adama Njie competed in the 800-meter run at the Olympic Games .

With a height of 1.65 m, Gassama holds the Gambian high jump record.
