Mamamoo ( Korean 마마 무 , stylized spelling MAMAMOO ) is a South Korean girl group that was founded in 2014 by WA Entertainment (now Rainbowbridge World). The group officially debuted on June 19, 2014 with the single Mr. Ambiguous . Mamamoo's official fan club name is "MooMoo".
history
2014: Debut and Piano Man
On June 19, 2014 Mamamoo made their official debut with the single Mr. Ambiguous and the EP Hello , which had already been released the day before. Their style, a mix of pop with retro R&B and elements of jazz and blues paired with strong voices from the group, earned them mostly good reviews. The single and EP both made it to # 18 and # 19 on the Gaon Charts . In November 2015 the EP Hello entered the charts again and reached number 16 after Mamamoo won an edition of the TV show "Immortal Song 2".
On November 21, 2014 Mamamoo released the single Piano Man along with the EP of the same name. The single was at number 41 and the EP at number 8. This EP also entered the charts again after winning "Immortal Song 2" in November 2015 and made it to number 17.
2015: Pink Funky
On April 2, 2015, Mamamoo returned with the single Aah Oop! back. Aah Oop! is a collaboration with Esna, an American singer with Korean roots who is also under contract with Rainbowbridge World. Esna was already active as a composer on the two previous EPs.
On June 19, the single Um Oh Ah Yeh was released together with the EP Pink Funky . The single reached number 3 in the charts and was Mamamoos' greatest success so far. Pink Funky rose to number 5.
In August the first fan meeting was held in the Olympic Park in Seoul called "1st MOO Party". Due to the high demand, the pre-sale meeting was sold out within a minute. Therefore, a second meeting was scheduled on the same day. A total of 2400 fans took part.
2016: 1st album Melting and Memory
On January 26, 2016, I Miss You, the first single from Mamamoos first full album, was released, which was announced for February 26. A second single, Taller Than You (1cm 의 자존심 ) , was released on February 12th. On February 26, the album Melting was finally released along with the single You're the Best ( 넌 is 뭔들 ) . The single entered the charts at number 3 and became Mamamoo's first number 1 hit a week later. The album was also a success, rising to number 2 on the album charts. You're the Best also brought Mamamoo its first victories in music shows such as M! Countdown, Inkigayo or Music Bank .
On November 7th, the single Décalcomanie was released along with the fourth EP Memory . In the run-up to this EP, several singles were released that can be heard on it: Angel (sung by Solar and Wheein), Dab Dab (sung by Moonbyul and Hwasa) and New York . Décalcomanie reached number 2 on the charts, Memory rose to number 3.
2017 – today: Purple and the "4 seasons, 4 colors" project
On June 22, 2017, Mamamoos' fifth EP Purple was released together with the single Yes I Am . Single and EP each reached number 2 in the charts. Mamamoo also won several music shows with Yes I Am .
On January 4th, 2018 Mamamoos new single Paint Me ( 칠 해줘 ) was released.
On March 7th, Mamamoo released their sixth mini-album Yellow Flower together with the single Starry Night ( 별 이 빛나는 밤 ) . A few hours earlier, the group had already released a music video entitled Star Wind Flower Sun ( 별 바람 꽃 태양 ) on Youtube, which can also be heard on the mini-album. Star Wind Flower Sun was written by Solar with Moonbyul. With the release of Yellow Flower , the group started their “4 seasons, 4 colors” project. Four albums should each focus on a color, a season and a member of the group.
Mamamoo released their seventh mini-album Red Moon on July 16, along with the single Egotistic .
On October 3, Mamamoo officially debuted in Japan. The group released the Japanese version of the single Décalcomanie there and then gave three concerts in Japan.
On November 29th, the group released their eighth mini-album Blue; S along with the single Wind Flower .
On March 14, 2019, White Wind , the group's ninth mini-album, was released together with the single Gogobebe ( 고고 베베 ) , ending the “4 seasons, 4 colors” project.
