Mammillaria armillata is a species of plant in the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet armillata means '(Latin) = decorated with clasps'.
description
Mammillaria armillata initially grows individually and later forming groups. The individual plant bodies are slim, cylindrical and up to 30 centimeters high and 4 to 5 centimeters in diameter. The blue-green warts are conical to cylindrical in shape, firm and without milky sap . The axillae are covered with wool and bristles. The 1 to 4 central spines are strong, yellowish-gray, darker with age. They are 1 to 2 inches long; partly hooked. The interlocking 9 to 15 radial spines are whitish, thin and bristle-like straight and are 0.7 to 1.2 centimeters long.
The flowers are funnel-shaped, pinkish-cream yellow. They are up to 2 centimeters long and also large in diameter. The fruits are clubbed red. They contain black seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria armillata is common in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur .
The first description was in 1900 by Mary Katharine Brandegee . Synonyms are Neomammillaria armillata (K.Brandegee) Britton & Rose (1923), Chilita armillata (K.Brandegee) Orcut (1926), Ebnerella armillata (K.Brandegee) Buxbaum (1951), Mammillaria dioica var. Armillata (K.Brandegee) Neutel. (1986), Bartsch Ella armillata (K.Brandegee) Doweld (2000) and Neomammillaria lapacena H.E.Gates (1932).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
