Neolloydia conoidea is a species of plant in the genus Neolloydia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet conoidea means '(Latin conoideus) cone-like, conical'.
description
Neolloydia conoidea grows individually or forms loose cushions. The slightly yellowish green to green shoots have for ordinary whitish wooly apices and are spherical to cylindrical. With a diameter of 3 to 6 centimeters, they reach heights of growth of 5 to 24 centimeters. Ribs are weak or absent. The conical, 3 to 10 millimeter long and 6 to 10 millimeter wide warts are clearly pronounced. The dimorphic, 3 to 5 millimeter large areoles are 8 to 12 millimeters apart and have an areolar furrow. The single central spine , which can also be missing, is black to reddish-brown, straight and protruding. It is between 5 and 25 millimeters long. There are 15 to 16 radial spines.
The funnel-shaped flowers are purple, 2 to 3 centimeters long and 4 to 6 centimeters in diameter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
The distribution area of Neolloydia conoidea extends from the southern United States to central Mexico .
The first description as Mammillaria conoidea was published in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Neolloydia in 1922 . One of the numerous synonyms is Neolloydia grandiflora (Otto ex Pfeiff.) FMKnuth
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
