Mammillaria gasseriana is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the cactus collector and importer Jakob Gasser (1870–1932), whose extensive collection formed the basis of the Zurich Succulent Collection .
description
Mammillaria gasseriana branches at the base and forms groups with spherical to short ovoid shoots 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter, hidden under the white thorns . The tip of the shoot is sunk. The cylindrical warts are rounded at the tip and are close together. They do not contain milk juice . The axillae are bare. The 1 to 2 strong central spines , which can also be missing, are light brown and have a dark tip. They are hooked, protruding and 4 to 8 millimeters long. The 40 to 50 radial spines, sometimes comb-shaped or lying on the shoot surface, are white and 5 to 8 millimeters long.
The wide funnel-shaped flowers are whitish cream with a light brown central stripe and a greenish throat. They are 7 to 8 millimeters long. The club-shaped fruits are brownish red, 6 to 9 millimeters long and contain blackish gray seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria gasseriana is common in the Mexican state of Coahuila . It was first described in 1927 by Friedrich Bödeker . Synonyms are Chilita gasseriana (Boed.) Buxb. and Ebnerella gasseriana (Boed.) Buxb.
Mammillaria gasseriana was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Vulnerable (VU) , d". H. endangered, classified. In 2013 it was named " Endangered (EN) ", i. H. listed as endangered.
