Mammillaria hahniana is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German cactus connoisseur and collector from Berlin-Lichtenfelde Adolf Hahn († 1954).

description

Mammillaria hahniana grows broadly spherical with a light green body, which sprouts from the base, creating groups. The individual bodies are up to 9 centimeters high and up to 10 centimeters in diameter. The warts are conical. The axillae are provided with up to 20 additional white wool thorns. The 20 to 30 radial spines are 1.5 inches long and hair-like white. The 1 to 4  central spines are shorter, whitish, sometimes with reddish tips. The purple flowers are up to 2 centimeters in diameter. The fruits are also purple in color and up to 7 millimeters in size. The seeds are dirty brown in color.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria hahniana is common in the Mexican states of Guanajuato , Tamaulipas and Querétaro and occurs at altitudes between 750 and 2200 meters.

It was first described in 1929 by Erich Werdermann .

Synonyms are the following species and varieties described:
Mammillaria saetigera Boed. & Tiegel (1933), Mammillaria bravoae R.T. Craig (1945), Neomammillaria mendeliana Bravo (1931), Mammillaria mendeliana (Bravo) Werderm. (1931), Mammillaria hahniana var. Mendeliana (Bravo) E. Kuhn (1981, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Mammillaria woodsii R.T. Craig (1943) and Mammillaria saetigera subsp. woodsii (RTCraig) Rogoz. & Plein (2002).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria hahniana subsp. bravoae (RTCraig) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1945 by Robert T. Craig as Mammillaria bravoae . David Richard Hunt introduced it in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria hahniana . The subspecies usually has 2 central spines and 28 to 30 radial spines. The flowers are deep pink.
  • Mammillaria hahniana subsp. hahniana :
    The nominate form has only one central spine and 20 to 30 radial spines. The flowers are deep purple.
  • Mammillaria hahniana subsp. mendeliana (Bravo) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1931 by Helia Bravo Hollis as Neomammillaria mendeliana . David Richard Hunt introduced it in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria hahniana . The subspecies usually has 2 to 4 central spines. Radial spines are often completely absent. The flowers are light pink.
  • Mammillaria hahniana subsp. woodsii (RTCraig) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1943 by Robert T. Craig as Mammillaria woodsii . David Richard Hunt introduced it in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria hahniana . The subspecies mostly has 2 central spines and 25 to 30 radial spines. The flowers are pink.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. listed as low risk.
