Mammillaria hernandezii is a species of plant in the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet honors Eulalio Hernandez, the nephew and companion of the Mexican cactus collector Felipe Otero.
description
Mammillaria hernandezii predominantly grows individually. The depressed, spherical, fresh green shoots are 2.5 to 4.5 centimeters in diameter. The pyramidal warts are without milky sap . The axillae are covered with short white wool. Central spines are absent. The 17 to 25 radial spines radiate out, being slightly bent back and not interlocking. They are white and grow to be 0.12 to 0.22 inches long.
The cherry red to light magenta colored (rarely white) flowers are up to 2 centimeters long. The creamy white to pale pink fruits are 1 to 1.4 centimeters long and 0.25 to 0.3 centimeters in diameter. A fifth of the fruits remain in the plant body. After they ripen, they dry up quickly. They contain black seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria hernandezii is common in the Mexican state of Oaxaca .
It was first described in 1983 by Charles Edward Glass and Robert Alan Foster . A synonym is Bartsch Ella hernandezii (Glass & RAFoster) Doweld (2000).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
