Mammillaria mystax is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet mystax describes the coiled axillary wool of the species that looks like a mustache.

description

Mammillaria mystax has a spherical, later elongated body up to 15 centimeters high and up to 10 centimeters in diameter. The cactus species owes its nickname to the thorns in different zones. The dark gray-green warts are square and crowned by pyramidal, white wooly axils with twisted bristles. The 5 to 6 radial spines are very variable in length and color. They are between 0.4 and 0.8 inches long and white with brown tips. The 3 to 4 central spines are initially dark purple, later graying and sometimes two centimeters long; one of them can reach 7 centimeters.

The purple-pink colored flowers are two centimeters in diameter. The fruits are lighter and up to 2.5 inches long. The seeds are brown.
