Mammillaria nivosa is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet nivosa means '(Latin nivosus) snowy, thickly white-haired'.

description

Mammillaria nivosa grows individually or in groups. The spherical to short cylindrical shoots are dark green to bronze in color. They grow to be 8 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The laterally compressed, bluntly conical warts contain plenty of milky juice . The axillae are covered with thick wool. A central spine is no different from the 6 to 13 radial spines, which are bright yellow to dark brown and up to 2 centimeters long.

The yellow flowers are 1.5 to 2 centimeters long and have the same diameter. The club-shaped fruits are red and contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria nivosa is common in the Caribbean . It was first described in 1937 by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer .

Synonyms are Mammillaria flavescens var. Nivosa (Link ex Pfeiff.) Backeb. (1961), Mammillaria prolifera var. Nivosa (Link ex Pfeiff.) B. Hofm. (1979, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3) and Mammillaria flavescens (DC.) Haw. (1819).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
