Mammillaria nunezii is a species of plant in the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet nunezii honors the Mexican botanist and cactus specialist C. Nuñez.

description

Mammillaria nunezii usually grows singly or sprouting. The spherical to cylindrical shoots are gray-green. They grow up to 6 inches high and 6 to 9 inches in diameter. The warts are conical to blunt square shaped. They do not carry milky juice . The axillae are covered with bristles. The 2 to 9  central spines are straight, sometimes one is hooked. They are brown with a blackish tip or white with a reddish tip and 1 to 1.5 inches long. The 10 to 30 radial spines are stiff, slender, white and are 5 to 7 millimeters long.

The funnel-shaped flowers are carmine red to magenta in color. They grow up to 1.5 centimeters in diameter. The fruits with a pink hint are club-shaped and greenish white. They grow up to 2.5 inches long and contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria nunezii is common in the Mexican states of Guerrero , Jalisco , Michoacán , Mexico, and Morelos .

It was first described in 1923 as Neomammillaria nunezii by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Charles Russell Orcutt introduced the species to Mammillaria in 1926 .

Other synonyms are Ebnerella nunezii (Britton & Rose) Buxb. (1951), Neomammillaria solisii Britton & Rose (1923), Mammillaria solisii (Britton & Rose) Boed. (1933), Ebnerella solisii (Britton & Rose) Buxb. (1951) and Mammillaria nunezii var. Solisii (Britton & Rose) Backeb. (1961).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria nunezii subsp. bella (Backeb.) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1942 as Mammillaria bella by Curt Backeberg . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria nunezii . The subspecies has 4 to 6 white central spines that have red tips. The flowers are carmine red.
  • Mammillaria nunezii subsp. nunezii :
    The nominate form has 2 to 9 brown central spines. The flowers are magenta in color.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
