Mammillaria peninsularis is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet peninsularis means 'growing on a peninsula'.

description

Mammillaria peninsularis grows individually or in groups, with the succulent plant bodies barely protruding above the soil surface. The spherical, flattened shoots are blue-green and up to 10 centimeters in diameter. The warts are square, protruding and pointed. They contain plenty of milky juice . The axillae are initially covered with white wool and later bare. Central spines are usually completely absent. Of the 4 to 8 radial spines, one is usually quite central and stiff. They are light brown with a dark tip and 6 millimeters long.

The light yellow or greenish flowers are up to 1.5 centimeters long, with the same diameter. The fruits are red and contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria peninsularis is only found on the southernmost tip of the peninsula in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur .

It was first described in 1923 as Neomammillaria peninsularis by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Charles Russell Orcutt introduced the species to Mammillaria in 1926 . Another synonym is Mammillaria gummifera var. Peninsularis (Britton & Rose) E. Kuhn (1981, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
