Mammillaria polyedra is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet polyedra means' (Greek hedra seat) place, surface; multifaceted '.

description

Mammillaria polyedra first grows individually, later forming groups. The deep green shoots are spherical to short cylindrical in shape. They grow up to 30 centimeters high with a diameter of 10 to 12 centimeters. The pyramidal-shaped warts have six to seven sides. They carry plenty of milky juice . The axillae are covered with wool and bristles. Central spines are completely absent. The 4 to 6 radial spines are straight, brownish yellow with a purple tip. They become 0.6 to 2.5 centimeters long, with the top ones always being the strongest and longest.

The pink flowers are up to 2.5 centimeters long. The broad, club-like fruits are red. They contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria polyedra is common in the Mexican states of Guerrero , Oaxaca, and Puebla .

It was first described in 1832 as by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius . Synonyms of Mammillaria polyedra Mart. are Cactus polyedrus (Mart.) Kunze (1891) and Mammillaria polyedra var. polygona (Salm-Dyck) E. Kuhn (1979, nom. inval. ICBN -Article 33.3)

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
