Coryphantha clavata is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet clavata comes from Latin , means 'club-shaped' and refers to the shape of the shoots.

description

Coryphantha clavata usually grows individually with cylindrical to club-shaped, dark blue-green shoots that reach heights of up to 30 centimeters with a diameter of 4 to 7 centimeters. The obliquely conical, shallowly furrowed warts are quite far apart and have one or two red nectar glands . The axillae are woolly white. The one to five yellowish to brown central spines , which can occasionally be missing, are straight or hooked and 2 to 3 centimeters long. The eight to nine brownish, 0.8 to 1.5 centimeters long radial spines have a darker tip.

The pale yellow flowers are up to 5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 4 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Coryphantha clavata is common in the Mexican states of Querétaro , Jalisco , Zacatecas , San Luis Potosí and Guanajuato .

The first description as Mammillaria clavata by Michael Joseph François Scheidweiler was published in 1838. Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Coryphantha in 1942 . A nomenclature synonym is Neolloydia clavata (Scheidw.) Britton & Rose (1923).

Coryphantha clavata subsp. clavata
The subspecies is common in the Mexican states of Zacatecas , Querétaro , San Luis Potosí and Guanajuato on the lower slopes of limestone hills. Synonyms are Mammillaria rhaphidacantha Lem. (1839), mammillaria scolymoides var. Raphidacantha (Lem.) Salm-Dyck (1850), echinocactus cornifer var. Raphidacanthus (Lem.) Poselger (1853), Coryphantha raphidacantha (Lem.) Lem. (1868), Cactus raphidacanthus (Lem.) Kuntze (1891); Mammillaria radicantissima Quehl (1912) and Coryphantha clavata var. Radicantissima (Quehl) Heinrich (1961).

The subspecies Coryphantha clavata subsp. stipitata forms only a single straight central spine. Its flowers are light yellow. The subspecies is common on volcanic hill slopes in the Mexican states of Zacatecas , Jalisco , San Luis Potosí and Guanajuato . The first description as Mammillaria stipitata by Michael Joseph François Scheidweiler was published in 1838. Reto F. Dicht and Adrian D. Lüthy placed the species in 2001 as a subspecies in the genus Coryphantha . Other synonyms are Mammillaria ancistracantha Lem. (1839), Coryphantha clavata var. Ancistracantha (Lem.) Hort. (no year, nom. inval. ICBN article 29.1), Coryphantha ancistracantha (Lem.) Lem. (1868), Cactus ancistracanthus (Lem.) Kuntze (1891), Mammillaria raphidacantha var. Ancistracantha (Lem.) K. Schum. (1898), Coryphantha raphidacantha var. Ancistracantha (Lem.) Y. Itô (1952) and Coryphantha clavata var. Ancistracantha (Lem.) Heinrich ex Backeb. (1961).
