Mammillaria voburnensis is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Mammillaria voburnensis grows in groups that are up to 30 centimeters high and also large in diameter. The cylindrically shaped shoots are dark green with a reddish tinge. They grow up to 5 inches high and 3 inches in diameter. The warts are very short, almost egg-shaped, angular at the top and round at the bottom. They carry plenty of milky juice . The axillae are covered with wool and bristles. There are up to 2  central spines . They are stiff, straight, sub-like, initially brown, later ivory-colored with spots and up to 1.2 inches long. Up to 9 almost identical radial spines are ivory white and up to 4 millimeters long.

The flowers are yellowish with a reddish tinge. The club-shaped fruits are red. They contain brown seeds .

Distribution and systematics

Mammillaria voburnensis is distributed in the Mexican states of Chiapas and Oaxaca as well as in Guatemala , Honduras and Nicaragua .

It was first described in 1845 by Frederick Scheer .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria voburnensis subsp. eichlamii (Quehl) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1908 as Mammillaria eichlamii by Leopold Quehl (1849-1923). David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria voburnensis . A synonym is Mammillaria voburnensis var. Eichlamii (Quehl) Repp. (1987). The subspecies has only one central spine and six radial spines.
  • Mammillaria voburnensis subsp. voburnensis :
    Synonyms are Mammillaria chapinensis Eichlam & Quehl (1909), Mammillaria felicis Schreier ex W. Haage (1976, nom. inval. ICBN -Article 29.1) and Mammillaria voburnensis var. quetzalcoatl Repp. (1987). The nominate form has 1 to 2 central spines and up to 9 radial spines.
