The Manampanihy ( where there are bats ) is one of the largest rivers in southern Madagascar . It drains the eastern flank of the Andohahela National Park and flows in a north-northeast direction. On its way it flows through the communities of Enaniliha , Ranomafana , Ampasimena and Manantenina . Its catchment area covers about 1087 km². It discharges an average of 20.6 m³ of water per second at the Manantenina station. At Manampanihy there are flood events in which the level can rise up to 10 meters as a result of the narrow, steep-walled valleys that it and its tributaries pass through.

About ten kilometers from its mouth in the Indian Ocean, the Manampanihy is crossed by the national road 12a , whereby the vehicles are put across the river by ferry. The ferry, which is powered by a diesel engine, takes about six minutes for the 300-meter-long crossing; an average of 294 vehicles and a little more than 1,000 passengers are transported per month.
