history
Charles Taylor Manatt, who later became ambassador and chairman of the Democratic National Committee , founded the firm in 1965. Business attorney Thomas Phelps and sports attorney Alan Rothenberg soon joined as partners; Rothenberg left the company in 1990 and moved to Latham & Watkins . Former U.S. Senator John V. Tunney was a partner from 1976 to 1987.
Mickey Kantor joined in 1976 and became a partner in 1991. He left the company in 1993 when he was appointed to the Clinton Cabinet , first serving as United States Trade Representative and then United States Secretary of Commerce .
L. Lee Phillips entertainment industry attorney, joined in 1977 and became a partner in 1985.
Subsidiaries
The subsidiary ManattJones Global Strategies advises public and private companies with branch offices in Mexico City and São Paulo ; The staff includes former Congressman and Ambassador James R. Jones. The managing partner is William T. Quicksilver.
