The Mandinka sword is a sword or saber of the Mandinka from West Africa .
description
The Mandinka sword usually has a slightly curved, single-edged blade . The unadorned blades often come from French production. The grip has no guard . A special feature are the carefully elaborated sheaths of leather . At the point the scabbard is much wider than the blade. The sheaths are decorated in many ways with wickerwork , tassels or large round plates . A shoulder strap is attached to the scabbard.
The swords were weapons and also status symbols , because only a few mandinka could afford them.
