Manfred Degen (church musician)

Manfred Degen (born August 2, 1957 in Neunkirchen (Saar) ) is a German Catholic church musician and organist . As diocesan church music director, he is head of the department for church music of the diocese of Speyer and head of the Episcopal Church Music Institute .

Life

Degen was born in Neunkirchen (Saar) in 1957. There he graduated from high school in 1976 at the State Realgymnasium. From 1976 to 1983 he studied at the Saarland University of Music , in 1979 he passed the B-exam, 1980 the state music teacher examination (major subject organ, minor subject singing), 1982 the A-exam in church music and 1983 finally the state music teacher examination (major subject music theory and Composition , minor subject piano).

From 1978 Degen was part-time choirmaster and organist at St. Peter's Church in Theley . In 1981 he moved to St. Albert in Saarbrücken as a full-time choir director and organist . Since 1984 Degen has been a lecturer at the Episcopal Church Music Institute (BKI) in the Diocese of Speyer. Until 2013 he was head of the organ building department. After restructuring, he was initially deputy head of the church music department and head of section of the BKI. In addition, until December 31, 2018, he was dean's cantor and church musician in the dean's office in Pirmasens . He is currently exercising this function on a provisional basis. From 2014 to 2015 he was a church musician at the Castle Church (Blieskastel) . Since January 1st, 2019 he has been head of the church music department and diocesan church music director of the Speyer diocese.

Degen performs regularly as a conductor, choir director and organist.
