In the encounter between ASK Vorwärts and SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt , he was used as a midfielder. Even after that, he had to be content with the role of a substitute player, in the seasons 1962/63 and 1963/64 he was only used in six league games in the league team. In 1964/65 he won his first title when ASK won the GDR soccer championship for the fourth time. However, Müller had only played in eleven of the 26 point games. The following year the ASK defended its title, in which Müller was involved with 14 point games. For the first time in the 1967/68 season, Müller was part of the regular squad of the forward team, which had been a football club since 1966, with 22 point matches. Trainer

After the end of his football career, Müller returned to his previous community, the ASG Vorwärts Neubrandenburg, and took over the training of the second-rate GDR league team there. With her he was the season winner in 1978 and 1984. After the first relay victory, his team missed the leap into the league as fourth in the promotion round, after the relay victory in 1984 Vorwärts Neubrandenburg fell victim to the restructuring of the army sports association, was dissolved and no longer took part in the promotion round. Müller, who had been a member of the army since 1962 and was finally an officer, was discharged from military service. At the beginning of the 1984/85 season he moved to the previous local and league rivals BSG Post Neubrandenburg , where he coached the GDR league team until 1987. After he took over the team as third in the table, the Mecklenburgers slipped further and further into the table cellar in the following years. When the team had finished the 1986/87 season in 15th place, one rank ahead of the relegation places, Müller was dismissed.
