Manfred Meinz (born March 16, 1931 in Magdeburg , † September 29, 2007 in Osnabrück ) was a German art historian and museum director in Osnabrück.

Life

He studied art history at the University of Hamburg and received his doctorate in 1967 on the topic of medieval sacred buildings in East Frisia . First he worked for eight years at the Altonaer Museum in Hamburg and then in 1970 he went to the Osnabrück Museum of Cultural History in Osnabrück . He lived with his second wife in Bad Iburg .

Manfred Meinz was the editor of Keramos for 30 years . Journal of the Society of Ceramic Friends .

Manfred Meinz and Jutta Schoeller-Meinz collected faience , especially valuable pieces from the faience and earthenware manufacturer Guischard, which was historically located in his native Magdeburg . The collection was transferred to the Dr. Manfred Meinz and Jutta Schoeller-Meinz Foundation brought in. The foundation, administered in trust by the city of Magdeburg, comprises 68 items, for which a value of € 360,000 was given in 2004. It is looked after and presented by the Magdeburg Cultural History Museum .

Director of the cultural history museum of the city of Osnabrück

Manfred Meinz was director of the cultural history museum of the city of Osnabrück from 1970 to 1991 (part of the Osnabrück Museum Quarter since 2017). Under his aegis, the cultural and historical collections were separated from the natural science collections. One museum became two organisationally independent museums. Meinz shaped the profile of the house as a museum of cultural history. He intensified the mediation offers in the house and the contacts with Osnabrück-based (family) companies and thereby won sponsors who supported him in expanding special collection areas. With the hiring of an folklorist in 1972 and an archaeologist in 1975, the care of the everyday culture and archeology departments was professionalized.

The Felix Nussbaum research is associated with his name. As the new director of the Museum of Cultural History, Manfred Meinz took over the works from the artist's estate in 1971. His predecessor Walter Borchers had the first discussions about the handle with Nussbaum's heirs. Meinz had the works restored and organized the first major retrospective. The exhibition, which was noticed nationwide, drew the Belgian art dealer Willy Billestraet's attention to Osnabrück, which ultimately led to the Nussbaum collection being supplemented with works that were created between 1942 and 1944 in exile in Belgium (or in hiding there) Works came to the Felix Nussbaum House .

Awards

On May 21, 2006 Manfred Meinz and his wife were allowed to register in the Golden Book of the City of Magdeburg in honor of their commitment to the foundation . Meinz was also a board member of the Osnabrück Friends' Association for the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche and was awarded a medal of honor in 2007 for his commitment.
