Manfred Pohl (Japanologist)

Manfred Pohl (born June 13, 1943 in Hamburg ; † March 30, 2015 there ) was a German Japanologist . He did research in the fields of politics and economics in Japan .

biography

Pohl studied Japanese Studies, Political Science, Sinology and History at the University of Hamburg . After receiving his doctorate with a thesis on the peasant policy of the Communist Party of Japan in 1973, he worked as an assistant at the Department of Language and Culture of Japan at the University of Hamburg until 1975. From 1975 to 1994 Pohl worked as a scientific advisor with the main focus on politics and economy of Japan at the Institute for Asian Studies (today: GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies ), where he worked as a country advisor for the institute magazines "Südostasien aktuell", " Japan aktuell " and the "Japan Jahrbuch" was involved. Since 1993 he was also head of the Japan department.

From 1994 until his retirement in 2008 Manfred Pohl was a full professor with a focus on the state, politics and society of Japan at the Asia-Africa Institute at the University of Hamburg.
