Manfred Scheffner

Manfred Scheffner (born September 22, 1939 in Hardteck , East Prussia ; † September 6, 2019 ) was a German jazz discographer from Munich .

Live and act

After working as a railway official, in publishing and at the ADAC , he founded a jazz mail order company in 1967 ("jazz by post") in Munich-Pasing and in 1969 co-founded the independent record label ECM Records (for Edition of Contemporary Music ). From 1989 to 2003 he was the head of the jazz department in the Beck am Rathauseck department store in Munich ("jazz is beck"), which is also known far beyond Munich , where he occasionally organized smaller concerts.

Scheffner was best known as the editor of the Bielefeld Jazz Catalog , which has been published annually since 1965.

From the 1960s he was a freelance presenter at Jazz Welle Plus . He also wrote various articles for jazz books, for example he is one of the collaborators on the Lexicon Jazz Standards (Bärenreiter 2001), edited by Hans-Jürgen Schaal .

His son Thorsten Scheffner founded the label "Organic Music" in Obing in 1997 (originally for organ in jazz).

His son Jan Scheffner has been a freelance photographer since 1989, specializing in reportage, people and jazz photography.
