Manfred Schwerin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manfred Schwerin (born April 22, 1950 in Klötze , Altmark ) is a German biologist . He was a university lecturer for animal breeding and product science at the University of Rostock and for many years head of the Leibniz Institute in Dummerstorf .

Live and act

Born in 1950 in the Altmark, Manfred Schwerin studied biology at the University of Rostock from 1970 to 1975 and received his doctorate in 1978 at the Academy for Agricultural Sciences in Berlin. In 1991 he qualified as a professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Rostock in the field of genetics and took over the management of the molecular biology research department at the Research Institute for the Biology of Farm Animals in Dummerstorf. From 2003 to 2015 Manfred Schwerin held the chair for animal breeding at the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Rostock and was also the head of the Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) in Dummerstorf.

Research engagements

Manfred Schwerin is considered one of the pioneers in molecular animal breeding and genome analysis. As a scientist, he worked in many national and international bodies such as the Bioeconomy Council of the Federal Government or the international advisory group of the Institut national de la recherche agronomique (INRA) and as a specialist reviewer for the German Research Foundation and the European Union, among others . The results of his diverse research work are documented in more than 300 scientific publications and represent essential contributions to the further development in the field of modern animal breeding research. In his twelve-year tenure, Schwerin has made the traditional research location Dummerstorf a powerful one through a strategic realignment and the further expansion of the infrastructure and recognized science location within the Leibniz Association.
