Manfred Thiele (born April 6, 1929 in Mühlhausen , Thuringia ; † December 28, 2015 there ) was a German author , book and art dealer , local researcher and investigative journalist . His subjects were the injustice that happened to the Jews during the Nazi regime and many people during the GDR era in his hometown of Mühlhausen in Thuringia.

Life

Manfred Thiele grew up in his hometown of Mühlhausen and graduated from commercial school in 1944. After graduating from school, 15-year-old Thiele was drafted into the army.

On April 4, 1945, US Army troops initially took the city of Mühlhausen. The now 16-year-old Thiele served them as an interpreter. On July 5, 1945, Mühlhausen was handed over to the Red Army and was now in the Soviet occupation zone . The Soviets arrested Thiele in 1947 on suspicion of espionage, but then released him.

When the situation slowly returned to normal after the end of the war, Thiele began training as a book and art dealer in 1948.

In 1959 Thiele founded the group of authors "Circle of Writing Workers" in Mühlhausen. It still exists today (2011) and is now called Authors' Circle Louis Fürnberg . In 2009, Manfred Thiele handed over management to Christiane Erdmann.

Thiele researched carefully on the topics of anti-Semitism and the persecution of Jews in Mühlhausen. He put the results of these investigations in his book "In the shadow of the yellow star", which appeared in 1990.

Thiele extended his research to the time of communist rule in the GDR. These investigations led to his publications such as "The 'Bockel Case' 1950 in Mühlhausen" (1998), "The criminal prosecution of veterinarians in the GDR district of Mühlhausen" (2004) and "VAE VICTIS. Mühlhausen under the Soviet occupation dictatorship 1945–1953 ”(2004). The latter has been translated into English.

He collected data on 500 individual fates of victims of arbitrary Soviet rule. This collection is part of the Thuringian Archive for Contemporary History in Jena .

Thiele collected extensive material on Soviet Special Camp 2 (1945–1950) consisting of correspondence, records, working papers, personal documents and eyewitness reports and on Erika Riemann , author of the book “The Loop on Stalin's Beard. A girl's prank, eight years in prison and the time after ”. Thiele's initiative for a “memorial service for the Mühlhausen victims of communist violence” in 2008 failed.

From 1991 to 1997 Thiele wrote the column “On the Point” for the Mühlhausen local section of the Thuringian General , which appeared over 300 times.

In 2013 an attempt was made to obtain the Federal Cross of Merit for Thiele via a petition, but this was unsuccessful.
