Manhiça (district)

Manhiça is a district of the Maputo province in Mozambique with the administrative seat in the eponymous town of Manhiça . The district is bordered by the Marracuene district to the south, the Moamba and Magude districts to the west and the Bilene district of Gaza Province to the north . To the east is the Indian Ocean .

The Manhiça District is 2,373 square kilometers and in 2007 had a population of 192,638 people, which corresponds to a population density of 81.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Compared to the 1997 population census - at that time 130,351 people lived in the Manhiça district - the number has increased by 47 percent. The population is on average very young, around 41 percent of all residents are under 15 years of age and the majority are rural; around twelve percent live in urbanized areas.

Facilities and services

There are 183 schools in the Manhiça district, 85 of which are primary schools ( escolas do ensino primário ). There are also 22 health centers and a rural hospital ("Hospital Rural") for medical care for the population.

Three Mozambican banks, the formerly state-owned Millennium bim , the Banco BCI and Barclays , each have a branch in the district, all in the capital Manhiça.

The district of Manhiça is divided into six administrative posts ( postos administrativos ):

  • Manhiça with the surrounding village of Maciana
  • Xinavane with the surrounding village 25 de Setembro
  • 3 de Fevereiro with the surrounding villages of Nwamatizyane and Taninja
  • Calanga with the villages of Checua and Lago Pate
  • Maluana with the surrounding village of Munguine
  • Ilha Josina Machel with the villages of Maguiguana and Nzonguene

Manhiça has been a Munizip ( município ) since 1998 , which means more self-government rights are associated with it. In addition, the local population has since then had the right to elect the district mayor themselves.

The Manhiça district is accessed by the important EN1 trunk road , it is a national road between the Maputo metropolitan area and northern Mozambique and is one of the country's most important traffic arteries. The district benefits in particular from travelers who stop in Manhiça.

The Linha de Limpopo (Maputo – Zimbabwe) railway also runs through the district. There is a train station in Manhiça itself.
