It mainly lives in cloudy water, over sandy and muddy soils, as well as seagrass meadows down to depths of 20 meters and also goes into the brackish water of river mouths. To reproduce, it moves to mangrove forests , where the young fish prefer to stay. The manila puffer fish is closely related to the immaculate puffer fish ( Arothron immaculatus ), which lives in the same habitat in the Indian Ocean .

Manila puffer fish are light gray with four to ten narrow brown vertical stripes on the flanks and on the back. The fish are 31 centimeters long. The skin is flaky and covered with small spines.

They live close to the ground, are solitary, territorial and feed on snails , mussels and crustaceans .
