The Mannesmann tower block (also Vodafone skyscraper is named after the interim user) an administrative building on Mannesmannufer ( federal highway 1 ) in the Düsseldorf district of Carlstadt . It was designed and built from 1956 to 1958 by the architects Egon Eiermann and Paul Schneider-Esleben , after they had won an architecture competition in 1954 . The original client was Mannesmann AG , which was taken over by Vodafone in 2000 . Hochtief was involved in the construction as a general contractor . Together with the Dreischeibenhaus , it is one of the first modern high-rise buildings in Germany. It stands for the time of the so-called economic miracle , in which private companies significantly changed the skyline of Düsseldorf with high-rise buildings in the style of post-war modernism .

In the immediate vicinity is the Mannesmann House , the former headquarters of the Mannesmann AG, built by Peter Behrens in 1911 . In front of the high-rise is the stainless steel sculpture Große Mannesmann by Norbert Kricke (1960).

At the end of 2008 the building complex was sold to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Vodafone stayed as tenant in the houses on Mannesmannufer until the new German headquarters of Vodafone in Düsseldorf was completed at the end of 2012 . After that, the high-rise became the seat of the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy, Industry, SMEs and Crafts of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

construction

The Mannesmann skyscraper is an 88.5 m high office building with 22 storeys, which was built as a steel frame construction around a solid reinforced concrete core. The office space is structured in a U-shape around the off-center building core, in which the elevators and stairwells are located. The building has a gross floor area of 14,200 m², of which approx. 12,100 m² are above ground.

The facade is in blue and white, the factory colors of Mannesmann AG. The building has been a listed building since 1997 .

Redevelopment

After the takeover by Vodafone, after a two-year planning phase, a renovation and conversion to the European headquarters of the telecommunications company took place in 2001. The entire building was gutted. The rough and finishing works and the building services alone had a total order volume of around 17 million euros and were completed within a year under great time pressure. The implementation was carried out by Heitkamp GmbH under the management of the RKW architecture office (Rhode Kellermann Wawrowsky). Vodafone AG Real Estate was the client for the renovation.

Roof usage

There are various antennas on the roof of the Mannesmann high-rise. These serve a directional radio node in the Vodafone mobile network for the entire Düsseldorf region. In addition to the connection of some nearby transmitter locations in the Düsseldorf city area, there are also long-range radio links to other nodes in the area. Company logos were also installed on the roof. The Mannesmann logo was visible from 1958 to 2000, followed by the Vodafone logo until 2012.

Art historical significance

The building is the work of the renowned architect Schneider-Esleben, which is why it was listed as a historical monument. It is also a symbol of Düsseldorf's city history.

"[It is] to be seen as a symbol of the economic boom of the 1950s and an important part of the work of one of the most important architects in German post-war history"

Others

The Vodafone high-rise with Christmas lights

Traditionally, the rooms are lit every year at Christmas time so that they shine in the form of an oversized Christmas tree over the entire building area. This tradition was continued after the takeover of Mannesmann by Vodafone. In addition, every spring since 2005, the north and south façades have been pasted with around 2000 m² posters referring to the jazz rally taking place in Düsseldorf. On January 22nd, 2010, the Düsseldorf mobile communications discounter simyo used the Vodafone high-rise as an advertising space and sent "neighborly greetings to Vodafone and Otelo". The background for the campaign was the Vodafone brand o.tel.o., which had recently announced its return to the mobile communications market.

At the suggestion of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Mannesmann high-rise should be named Richard-von-Weizsäcker-Haus . After a public debate, Minister Garrelt Duin (SPD) announced in December 2015 that he would no longer pursue this plan.
