The Mannsschild saxifrage ( Saxifraga androsacea ) is a species in the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae).

The Mannsschild saxifrage is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 2 to 4 centimeters. It grows individually or in small groups. There are non-flowering shoots. The leaves are almost all at the base, pressed like a rosette, lanceolate to spatulate and measure 5 to 25 × 2 to 5 millimeters. They are usually with entire margins , only rarely 1 to 3 short teeth are found at the tip, the leaf margin is protruding glandular hair . The stem, which is also glandular, is upright and has 0 to 3 alternate leaves and 1 to 3 flowers. The petals are white, obovate, rounded to marginalized, three-veined and 5 to 7 millimeters long. The sepals are half as long, narrower and egg-shaped.

Flowering time is from May to August.

The species has chromosome numbers 2n = 16 or 66, 88, 124, 150, 198 or approx. 220.

Occurrence

The Mannsschild saxifrage occurs in the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, in the Balkans and in East Asian mountains, in sub-alpine to alpine snow valleys and on moist limestone rubble at altitudes of 1400 to 3400 meters. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises on the Bockkarkopf in Bavaria up to 2600 m above sea level.

The species is common in the Alps and here is a union s character species of the Arabidion caeruleae.
