The Mantola was a cargo passenger ship operated by the British India Steam Navigation Company . It was launched on March 22, 1916 at the Barclay Curle & Company shipyard in Glasgow . It was torpedoed by the German submarine U 81 southwest of Ireland on February 8, 1917 during World War I and sank the following day.
Rediscovery
The treasure hunt company Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered the shipwreck in 2011 at a water depth of around 2,500 m. It has £ 12 million worth of silver on board.
