Manuel Altolaguirre

Manuel Altolaguirre (born June 29, 1905 in Málaga , † July 26, 1959 in Burgos ) was the founder of the lyrical magazine "Ambos". He is counted among the poets of the Generación del 27 . The first publications of this group were made around 1927.

Life

Altolaguirre graduated from the "Colegio de los jesuitas San Estanislao" in Málaga and then studied law at the Universidad de Granada , which he left without a degree. In the Spanish Civil War he took the republican side and therefore left Spain in February 1939 to settle first in Cuba and finally in Mexico. In 1959 he returned to Spain to present his film “Cantar de los Cantares”, based on the version by Fray Luis de León, at the film festival “Festival de Cine de San Sebastián” in Córdoba . In the same year he died in a car accident in Burgos.

With the collaboration of José María Hinojosa, José María Souvirón and Emilio Prados, he was co-director of the magazine “Litoral”, founder of the Spanish-English magazine “1616” and editor of Pablo Neruda's magazine “Caballo Verde para la Poesía”.
